Our Canadian Roots and the Founding of Youth Hockey Tournaments in Western New York
The origins of our youth hockey tournaments in Western New York trace back to a unique partnership between Gene Harrington and legendary professional hockey player Willie Marshall. Their shared vision in the early days of organized youth competition helped shape the cross-border hockey culture that still defines our events today.
Our youth hockey tournaments in Western New York began through the vision of Gene Harrington and legendary Willie Marshall. When Willie became general manager of the newly built Tonawanda Sports Center, he needed help filling the ice schedule for the new facility. Gene partnered with him by organizing tournaments and attracting teams and families to the rink, helping ensure the ice was fully utilized.
Together, they created cross-border events that brought Canadian and American teams together in true hockey tradition. Western New York’s natural connection to Ontario gave the tournaments a strong Canadian presence from the start, establishing a legacy of competition, friendship, and international hockey culture that continues today.
Few people shaped my hockey journey more than my father, Gene Harrington, and the legendary Willie Marshall. From a young age, I spent every summer training under Willie’s guidance as a goaltender, learning not only the technical skills of the position but also the discipline and competitiveness that defined his career. By age 13, I was already trying out for junior teams, and in high school I was honored to be selected by the Toronto Marlboros. Because NCAA eligibility rules at the time would have been affected, I chose instead to play for the Orillia Travelways, a Jr. A Tier club that served as a feeder to the Oshawa Generals. I attribute my success to Willie’s mentorship and to my parents’ unwavering dedication—my father’s vision and guidance in hockey, and my mother’s countless hours driving me to and from the rink—together creating the foundation that shaped both my playing career and my life.
