Harrington announces optional 4 game guarantee and extended period lengths for all General Event Dates.

The Gene Harrington Tournaments is pleased to announce that we are now offering an optional 4 game guarantee.  “For years I’ve considered offering a 4 game guarantee but have been reluctant to do so since the additional cost could make our tournaments too expensive for teams that are on a tight budget.  By offering it as an option teams have the flexibility of  paying for a 4th game versus rolling the dice and letting their team’s performance determine whether they play a 4th or 5th game,” says Tournament Director Bob Harrington.

Harrington announces Outdoor Games.

The Gene Harrington Tournaments is please to announce that we have entered into an agreement with Buffalo RiverWorks Outdoor Ice facility.  “Last season we scheduled a few games at RiverWorks and the feedback from the teams was that they loved it, and wanted more,” says Tournament Director Bob Harrington.   

The December Shootout Classic, and the January Winter Ice Experience will utilize RiverWorks throughout the entire weekend to provide teams will an out door experience that they will never forget.  Space is limited so you should get your teams registered soon.

Harrington announces they are offering non checking divisions for GTHL/MHL Travel A teams.

The Gene Harrington tournaments in support of the movement towards non checking at the travel A level is happy to announce that we will be hosting a Minor and separate Major Bantam A  non contact divisions during October’s Niagara Showdown.  The catalyst for this is the decision made last season by the Great Toronto Hockey League and the Mississauga Hockey League to remove body contact for all  A level players.

The Greater Toronto Hockey League will be eliminating body checking at the “A” level beginning next season.  The league announced Saturday the “progressive elimination” of body checking, starting with minor bantam for the 2015-16 season.

The GTHL board of directors proposed the rule change — which was approved by GTHL member clubs and associations with a majority vote of 326 to 195 — as a result of feedback received from a league-wide survey on the topic of body checking conducted during the 2013-14 season.

The majority of respondents in the survey supported the removal of body checking at the “A” level, which is a competitive league under triple-A and double-A.

“There is now a mountain of evidence demonstrating the negative effects of body checking in hockey and it is clear that it can account for 50 per cent or more of all concussions,” said Dr. Michael Cusimano, a neurosurgeon at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital.

“While estimates vary depending on the particular league, with a move like the one the GTHL has made, one could expect a threefold reduction in injuries.”

The minor bantam level consists of 12 and 13-year-old players. Founded in 1911, the GTHL is the largest minor hockey league in the world with more than 40,000 annual participants in Toronto, North York, Scarborough, Vaughan and Markham, ranging from age 4 to 20.
